When you start a fresh mail account,it seems like you have plenty of space.But it just matter of few years,and you will realise that the space disappears too fast. Over the period of time, you might endup subscribing to multiple website, articles etc. They send you emails regularly and things add up, and before your realise you start running out of space.
Gmail’s generous free storage is an excellent feature.Having said that, the Gigabytes of free data makes cleaning our email the last of our priorities, which leaves us with hundreds — sometimes thousands — of emails to go through.If you see many unread emails,you may get overwhelmed and intimidated.
In this blog,I'll show you how to delete every email at once with a few clicks.Below are the instructions:
Search By Date.
In the search bar,you can type the date in a YYYY/MM/DD format.Let's see few egamples below
- before:2020/12/15. Doing so will filter all emails and show you emails before 15th Dec 2020
- older_than:1y. Doing so will show you emails older than 1 year
- older_than:1m. Doing so will show you emails older than 1 month
- older_than:1d. Doing so will show you emails older than 1 day
You can delete these filtered emails now.
Delete all unread emails.
In the search bar,you can type is:unread .That will filter out and display all unread emails.You can then delete them.
Using Categories and Labels
There are times when you can't just rely on date or time. You may want more control and would want to refine your search based on the categories the emails are kept in OR or labels you assigned them.
I have categorized all my online shopping related emails under a label named "onlineshopping" .Therefore, if you want to search all emails that are assigned "onlineshopping" label then do below
- Go to search bar and search for label:onlineshopping. This will give you all the emails in the label "onlineshopping".You can delete them now
You can also filter email based on categories.Once you open your Gmail mailbox, you’ll find all your emails are segregated into three categories
- Primary,
- Social,
- Promotions,
- Forums

Like we did with labels, we can also filter emails based on category.Let's see few egamples below
- category:social
- category:forums
- category:promotions
- category:primary
Mix and Match.
You can mix and match all the filters we learnt till now. For eg,in the search bar if you search with older_than:1d label:onlineshopping, it will show you all emails that are older than 1 day among the emails that are labelled "onlineshopping".
